Your Creativity Toolbox: Yarn/String
I love going to the craft section in a department store or to the knitting/crochet section at a hobby story and looking at all the varieties and colors of yarn, nylon string, and embroidery floss.
There are obvious uses for such things, such as activities going along with what’s mentioned above. I can think of some other uses, though.
Some writers, particularly those who write fantasy, sometimes have to create maps. What better way to do it than to clear a large work surface and create the map using string or yarn, color-coding the different countries or areas of a kingdom? Then instead of trying to recreate it on the computer, take a picture with a digital camera and transfer it to your computer that way.
String can also be used to measure something, providing you can semi-accurately guess inches and feet.
Jewelry makers and mixed media artists can find even more uses for it.
Whether you write, measure, crochet, knit, embroider, or do something else, yarn and string can be a valuable addition to your creativity toolbox.
